The Copper City

Rome is home to Revere Copper, hence the nod and notoriety as The Copper City. Featuring two National Parks, Rome’s history began as a fortified trading post on one of the most important North American transportation routes, the Oneida Carry, commemorated by the Oneida Indian Nation with an impressive bronze sculpture in downtown.

Rome’s downtown is anchored by Fort Stanwix National Monument. Known as “the fort that never surrendered” for repelling a prolonged siege in 1777. Just six miles away, Oriskany Battlefield State Historic Site serves as an awe-inspiring reminder of one of the Revolutionary War’s most deadly engagements. Honor America Days in July is a patriotic celebration with family fun events and an open- air concert on the lawn at Fort Stanwix culminating with a majestic fireworks display.

Catch a vintage film at the Capitol Theatre, a restored 1928 movie house, host of Capitolfest, CNY’s 35mm silent and early talkie film festival. Take a break at Copper City Brewing Company to enjoy local craft beers on tap. Nature lovers will find Delta Lake State Park a great spot for camping, hiking and watersports. Walk or cycle the Mohawk River Trail. Spring through fall, Fort Rickey Discovery Zoo teaches conservation through engaging animal interactions, kid-friendly attractions and activities.
